James Ernest Schwartz (1843-1900) purchased the property c. 1898; his wife Emma, their sons John and Frank, and Frank's family spent summers there between 1899 and 1906. In 1907, Frank and his family moved to Sutherland Farm, Cobourg, Ontario and Emma and John (and later John's family) remained at "Hillcrest."
