Privacy Policy

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia makes its collections available to the public -- meaning that those who ask are given access to a wide variety of visual materials, including plans and interior photographs of private residences. However, internet publication via the PAB Project means that more people than ever can readily peruse The Athenaeum of Philadelphia's visual materials. Anyone might stumble across these images and gain from them an in depth understanding of the layout and appearance of private spaces. This greater accessibility may be construed by some as an invasion of privacy or a threat to security.

Therefore, the PAB Project will not post floor plans or interior photographs of spaces that can reasonably be construed as private. "Private space" includes most standing residences, public schools, and banks. It does not include non-residential space such as garages, sheds, and stables, temporary residences such as hotels, or reasonably public spaces, such as colleges, house museums, model homes, office buildings, and places of worship. "Private space" also does not include residences, schools, and banks that are known to have been demolished or significantly altered. The PAB Project will post plans and photographs of exteriors, non-private interiors, elevations, and sections, as well as interior and exterior images that have been traditionally published and are now in the public domain.

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia recognizes that these measures may be considered inadequate by some individuals. If a property owner feels that certain published images are problematic, and can demonstrate with reasonable certainty ownership of the structure depicted, the offending images will be promptly removed upon request. However, textual information, including that which directs PAB Project users to visual material holdings, will remain online.
