Institution
Chartered in 1883 "to preserve the civil, political and religious history of the county and to promote the study of history," the Society operates a museum and library, conducts programs and workshops, sponsors a genealogy study group, and publishes a semi-annual Bulletin and reprints significant county histories and maps from time to time.

Collections
Library collections include more than 30,000 books and pamphlets, family, church and cemetery records, newspapers, diaries, letters, ledgers, and other manuscript material, together with early deeds, tax records, wills, naturalization papers and other public documents.
