Founded in 1880, Bucks County Historical Society collects, preserves, and interprets the history and culture of Bucks County and the Delaware Valley Region. It operates the Mercer Museum, the Research Library and the Fonthill Museum. It is the custodian of a regionally and nationally significant collection of tools and artifacts which illuminate the history of pre-industrial America to c. 1850. The Library Collections also focus on two related subject areas: early American technology, culture, and folk art; and the life and work of Henry Chapman Mercer.
The Mercer Museum Research Library offers patrons free Wi-Fi, a photocopier, outlets for laptops, microfilm readers, and is handicapped accessible. Admission to the Mercer Museum Research Library is included either in a museum entrance ticket or with a Bucks County Historical Society membership. Collections
The Mercer Museum Research Library is the major research center for local and family history related to Bucks County and the surrounding region. With its roots in the founding of the Bucks County Historical Society in 1880, the Library houses over 20,000 books, periodicals and pamphlets, 2,500 feet of county archives, over 800 manuscript collections, more than 12,000 images, and maps and other records that document not only local history, but the life and work of Henry Chapman Mercer and early American technology, culture and folk art. The Library is the depository for Bucks County government records from 1683 to the 1930s. There are other special collections including photographs, prints and drawings, maps and atlases, newspapers, memorabilia, microfilm, and more.
