Hailing from Watsonville, PA, the son of William Andrew and Mary Agnes Durham, James G. Durham received his Certificate in Architecture from Drexel Institute's day program in 1906. He first appears in the Philadlephia city directories in 1908 as a draftsman, but in 1909 he and brother William Leigh Durham establish their own firm (Durham Bros.), architects and draftsmen. Under this name they continued to operate through 1937 when William L. Durham died. After his brother's death, James G. Durham continues in Philadelphia telephone directories with an individual listing; but then in 1954 Durham Bros. reappears in the directories.

By 1960, James G. Durham is residing in Mt. Holly, NJ.
